Literature Text

Will inviolate

I am rhythm

Coming full circle

The soul conductor speaks

Splash paint up all my arms

Sat like a stone, a shanty plays

The mind an iron bubble with molten core

Spider webs of silver are spun for butterflys

Ripe fruit rots before it hits the ground

Tempered psyche - spinning engine

Do not choke me back with soft words

A fierce slughorn is my answer
One word in this poem bares explanation. Slughorn is a scots gaelic word, a variation on Sluagh-Ghairm, meaning a Battle-Cry. It is also where we get the Anglicism, 'Slogan' from. When I write, I try to introduce variations and dialect words, non-standard english, the language of the edges and so on. I am constantly working on doing this in a way that doesn't feel artificial or upset the understanding of the reader. Please do give me some feedback on the use of unusual words and phrases in my poetry and prose and tell me if I am missing the mark or indeed if you enjoyed it.  You may ask, why did I not use the word Slogan? If it means the same thing as Slughorn and with the added bonus of being understandable to almost any English speaker then surely it is better. Well, using the older form strips it of certain corporate connotation and helps us understand the word a little better, that is to say the origin of the word slogan is a lot richer, deeper and more interesting then its current description of a bland corporate byline. But this does not matter if the readers experience is one of awkwardness or distaste, so do tell me what you think of this particular word use here, and hope you enjoy the poem.
